Diploma in Interior Design : The Curriculum

COURSE DATES: 03 to 28 Nov 2008, 27 April-22 May 2009, 02-27 Nov 2009

The comprehensive syllabus enables students to communicate effectively with their clients, starting with taking an accurate brief, drawing up plans and elevations, producing professional sample boards, through to learning to present a scheme professionally.

All the lectures on the decorative element are underpinned with the relevant technicalities. For example, designing a window treatment will require a specification for the curtain maker. Planning a lighting scheme will require a lighting and electrical layout. These technicalities are essential requirements for an interior designer to work effectively within the business and form an integral part of the course.

Students work on two ongoing projects which develop design elements and methodology as it is taught. The projects form part of the continuous assessment, the required standard culminating in the Ivy House Diploma at the end of the course.

During the course there is the opportunity to expand on some of the lectures with outside visits involving textiles, conservation and historic interiors taking the form of an afternoon away from the studios.

There is also a day in London using the trade showrooms. This is an excellent introduction to the industry and how it operates and students use this day to source for their projects.

Over four weeks students will have developed an excellent foundation on which to build a career. Whether setting up their own practice or working for someone else, there will be new found confidence to read plans, scale drawings, produce maquettes, design window treatments, lighting schemes, identify textiles and discuss a client's requirements knowledgably, as well as being able to source all sorts of specialist decorative items.

This course is for those with a high level of commitment and motivation who wish to achieve the maximum amount within a limited period of time. Thus students are expected to complete homework throughout the duration of the course.

No previous design experience is required, but a good sense of colour and an innate flair for design and decoration is essential to take full advantage of the expertise and professionalism that this course offers. Students who would like to improve their drawing skills before this course are recommended to take the Foundation Drawing Skills before the commencement of the Diploma Course. This course is especially helpful as the basic techniques are familiar and progress is accelerated.

Our classes are small, friendly and highly professional and Ivy. House Interior Design Courses which have been established since 1987 are well respected within the industry.
